Fox Control

Fox control refers to the range of methods used to reduce the population and impact of feral foxes, especially the European red fox (Vulpes vulpes), which is a declared pest across most of Australia.

Foxes are highly adaptable predators that:

Kill native animals and livestock (especially lambs and poultry)

Threaten biodiversity and contribute to species extinctions

Spread diseases such as echinococcosis and mange

Fox Control Methods

1. 1080 Baiting

Most widespread and effective method in rural and bushland areas.

Uses sodium fluoroacetate (1080) bait, which is more toxic to foxes than most native species.

Must be applied by licensed users under strict regulations.

Often coordinated across multiple properties for best results.

2. Ground Shooting

Performed by trained pest controllers or landholders.

Effective at targeting individuals missed by baiting.

Often used during spotlighting at night or with thermal scopes.

3. Trapping

Cage or leg-hold traps used in urban, peri-urban, or sensitive environments where baiting is not appropriate.

Requires regular inspection and must follow animal welfare guidelines.
