Fox Trap

Fox trapping is a method of pest control used to capture feral foxes (Vulpes vulpes) for humane removal or destruction. It is especially useful in sensitive environments, urban or peri-urban areas, and places where baiting is not suitable—such as near pets, livestock, or endangered wildlife.
Types of Fox Traps
1. Soft-Catch Leg-Hold Traps
- Most commonly used for foxes in Australia
- Designed to minimise injury, using padded jaws
- Fox steps on a trigger plate and the trap clamps around the leg
- Must be checked at least daily to comply with animal welfare standards
2. Cage Traps
- Large box-style traps that safely enclose the fox
- Ideal for urban areas or where non-target animals may be present
- Foxes are lured in with bait (e.g. meat, eggs, fish oil)
