Silver Fox Management
Silver fox management refers to the control of a color morph of the European red fox (Vulpes vulpes)—known as the silver fox. Despite its name, the silver fox is not a separate species, but rather a dark-furred genetic variant of the red fox. These foxes have a striking black-to-silver coat due to a recessive gene.
Why Manage Silver Foxes?
Like all red foxes in Australia, silver foxes are:
- Invasive predators
- Known to kill native wildlife such as birds, reptiles, and small mammals
- A threat to lambs, poultry, and small livestock
- Capable of spreading diseases (e.g. hydatid disease)
- Listed as a declared pest species in many Australian states, including New South Wales
Silver foxes, although less common in the wild, require the same control measures as red foxes due to their identical behaviour, diet, and ecological impact.
